Tips for Creating a Topic Outline:

1. The outline should have a title.

2. The closer an outline entry is to the left margin, the greater its value.

3. Roman numerals are used for major topics, capital letters for the next most important entry, Arabic numerals for the next most important entry, and lowercase letters for examples and details.

4. Numbers and letters of the same kind are to be in vertical alignment.

5. The first word of any topic, major or minor, should begin with a capital.

6. No topic, major or minor, should have fewer than two items below it.

7. In topical outlines, entries should be parallel; that is, if entry A, for example, begins with a verb, then entry B should begin with a verb.
